Dance Studio Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Recently, Michele’s Dance Studio (MDS) in Livingston celebrated its 40th anniversary with a week full of celebration including a birthday kickoff for the founder Miss Michele, spirit week dress up days, and a Saturday Night Sparkling Soiree. They also looked to the future with a Future Choreographers Showcase. The whole event was called 40Fest: Celebrating Forty Years of Michele’s Dance Studio. Michele Sandler started teaching dance classes in her Livingston basement, and over decades, grew her school into a thriving studio. After a lifetime of leadership, Miss Michele retired and her son Ross Sandler, a professional dancer, took over as MDS’s director. “After celebrating a milestone of the past, the studio is now holding its spring enrollment where new students will become part of our future,” says Ross. To sign up for classes, go to michelesdancestudio.com.

Eagle Scout Project to Benefit the Community

Harold Ross, a senior at West Orange High School has completed an impressive project toward becoming an Eagle Scout. He created the Crystal Lake Learning Center in West Orange that has four benches and a kiosk boasting information on the history of the lake. West Orange Town Historian Joe Fagan provided the information for the kiosk. Harold says he enlisted the help of family, friends, and fellow boy scouts in his endeavor to create the benches and kiosk for people visiting the area to enjoy. West Orange township graciously donated the logs for the benches, Boards and Beams Lumber in Fairfield provided the materials at a discount, and John Holloway from Heirloom Woodworks in Piscataway donated his mobile sawmill services to cut the logs. In addition, master woodworker, Dana Hagstrom, of West Orange, mentored Harold through the design and building process. Harold says he is pleased with how the project turned out and that he “hopes it has an impact on visitors to the area.”

Local Business to be Featured in a Documentary

An adult scavenger hunt party business owned by Kevin Harrison of West Orange, his wife Ilisa, and Jason and Leigh Gorvitz, of Livingston, is being featured in a documentary based on the 1980 American comedy film, Midnight Madness, in which college students participate in an all-night scavenger hunt. With the business aptly named Midnight Madness Events, the company was a shoo-in for being profiled. The Midnight Madness Events team, who are called game masters, plans private scavenger hunt parties and public events where teams drive around searching for clues, while competing for a monetary prize. Kevin says that the events always end up at a restaurant or bar where all of the teams go to wind down after vigorously searching for clues. “My mind is always on scavenger hunts because I am constantly thinking about places to put clues as I drive up and down highways, and puns, which are used as clues,” says Kevin, who loves what he does.

Livingston Teacher Publishes Children’s Book

arisa Vosa, a Spanish teacher at Livingston High School, has written a children’s book called, The Seed and the Bee. The story is about a seed from a different land that travels to a distant location due to a storm. It has messages about immigration, racism, discrimination, SEL, inclusion and friendship. It was inspired by her own story as she is an immigrant herself. She says, “I see a lot of children coming to the US from other countries who feel out of place. This book is meant to comfort them.” Linguistically, the book is for grade 3 and up, but can be read to children of all ages as vocabulary is defined on every page. Marisa says, “It feels pretty good to have a piece of me out in the world. If I can reach one person and make them have hope, then the book has served its purpose.” The book is available on Amazon.

Fourth Grade Caldwell Student Honored at YALE UNIVERSITY

Nine-year-old Bobbi Wilson of Caldwell has become quite a superstar in the scientific field since October 2022, where she faced an incident of racism when a neighbor called the police on her for spraying trees to rid them of spotted lanternflies, an invasive species invading New Jersey. The neighbor reported that a “little Black woman is walking and spraying stuff on the sidewalks and trees,” and he said it “scares me.” Bobbi had simply been doing her part to rid the state of spotted lanternflies as part of the Stomp It Out! campaign, which asks people to kill the bug that is killing the trees and crops.

The situation went viral, and many local officials, as well as Yale University administrators stepped in to help turn the negative situation into a positive one. In fact, Governor Murphy tweeted, “Racism has no home here. No mother should have to worry about the cops being called on their child for trying to make the world a better place.”

It has been a whirlwind of accolades ever since for the young scientist, who had been using her own homemade solution of water, dish soap, and apple cider vinegar to spray the trees.

On December 6th, Bobbi received the Sustainability Award from the Caldwell Environmental Commission, and six days later, on December 12th, she was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation by the United States Department of Agriculture. On December 20th, Bobbi and her sister Hayden, 13, who stood up for Bobbi with a powerful speech at their Town Hall meeting, received Certificates of Excellence from NJIT, which also presented both girls with full scholarships to the summer 2023 Center for PreCollege Programs at NJIT.

Next, Montclair’s Minority Police Officer Association presented Bobbi with the Community Care Taking Award on January 13th, and Attorney General Matt Platkin was there to honor Bobbi as well. In addition, the 11th Congressional District of New Jersey awarded Bobbi for “her passion for science and environmental stewardship” and thanked her for her important efforts to help the community. The award was presented to Bobbi by Congresswoman Mickie Sherrill. She was also invited for private tours of Princeton University and The American Museum of Natural History.

When Yale University heard about the incident, the school invited Bobbi there to tour the Peabody Museum with other black female scientists. While there, Yale invited Bobbi to donate the spotted lanternfly into their database. Bobbi sent 27 spotted lanternflies to Yale, and on January 20th, Bobbi went back to Yale University’s Peabody Museum Entomology Division for a ceremony to

accept Bobbi’s donation of her spotted lanternfly collection into Yale University’s research collection. She is now the first contributor of spotted lanternflies to Yale University. The collection is named after Bobbi Wilson, and anyone that uses the spotted lanternflies from that collection must credit Bobbi.

And there are still many more accolades to come for the little scientist who is striving to protect the environment from the spotted lanternfly. Bobbi says she feels “proud” of the recognition that her work has received. Her mom Monique says she too is “proud of Bobbi,” and is “looking forward to Bobbi’s bright future.”

West Orange Native Changes the Game at Division III Colleges for Students

West Orange native, Sebastian DeSimone’s desire to join the cross country and track teams at Gwynedd Mercy University in PA, as an Integrated Studies student not working toward a degree, has changed the NCAA playing field for all students following in Sebastian’s footsteps. In the past, only full-time students working toward a degree were allowed to join college D3 teams. This all changed this past August, when Sebastian received a waiver from the NCAA allowing him to run for his school. The NCAA has now made the waiver available to all D3 college students.

“We are super excited because we were uncertain if this would happen for months,” says mom Joanne DeSimone. “We didn’t anticipate that this would affect all students in D3 schools nationwide. That was a wonderful surprise. This waiver allows schools to offer wider inclusivity. Now there is no barrier to sports on campus.”

Joanne says that she hopes other D3 colleges become familiar with the NCAA waiver and that they let their students know about it.

Sebastian, who is in a special program within the school for people with intellectual disabilities, is working toward a certificate in Integrated Studies. He hopes to become an assistant teacher.

The college freshman was on the Varsity cross country and track teams at West Orange High School and has a love of running. When he was accepted into college, he was disappointed to learn that he could not compete. Now, with this waiver in hand, the distance runner plans to participate on the cross country and indoor/outdoor track teams at Gwynedd.

He says he originally joined the high school track team to make friends. He likes that the sport keeps him active and that he has something in common with his teammates. He says that his teammates at Gwynedd have been very welcoming to him and that he loves being part of the team.

Joanne says that “running has helped Sebastian learn that he can do hard things on and off the field. Now, it’s taught him strive for equality.”

Ride the Easter Bunny Express!

For over 30 years the Museum has been welcoming the thousands of families who come to Whippany to celebrate the return of Spring with this fun-themed train ride through Morris County! The Easter Bunny and helpers will be on board the train greeting everyone during the 45-minute round-trip ride along the historic Whippanong Trail.

Your train ride experience departs from and returns to the Whippany Railway Museum site in Whippany. Guests enjoy the comfort of heated passenger coaches as the Bunny makes his way through the cars to visit with you and your children. Kids are sure to be delighted when they receive a special gift from the Easter Bunny while riding aboard this memorable train. Guest will ride on one of the Easter Bunny premium club cars:

Subscription Club Car: “Lackawanna No. 2454”—Surround yourself with the grandeur of another era onboard the award-winning Lackawanna Subscription Club Car No. 2454, which radiated

elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express’ that operated between Hoboken Terminal and Gladstone.

Club Car: “Jersey Coast”—The Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’ is a beautifully-restored car that features all the amenities offered by the CNJ’s deluxe ‘Blue Comet’ passenger train of the 1930s. ‘The Blue Comet’ ran between Jersey City and Atlantic City, and the striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space.

Coach Car: Our standard “Dieseliner” coaches may look modern, but they are historic in their own right. Still in service at Whippany over a half-century since they were constructed, you can enjoy a relaxing ride onboard these cars that once conveyed commuters to Hoboken Terminal from 1970 through the early2000s.

This is a limited-time event, and the rides usually sell out early, so advance online reservations are strongly recommended!

The West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Right Around the Corner

The 70th Anniversary of the West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade is taking place on Sunday, March 12th, beginning at 12:15 pm at the corners of Mt. Pleasant Avenue and Main Street. The Parade route will make its way north on Main Street and end at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Since part of Main Street will be closed off, complimentary shuttle buses will be provided to transport marchers and spectators to the starting location of the Parade at Town Hall.

This year, the Parade Committee is honoring Michael “Mike” McCormick as the 2023 Grand Marshall. Mike is excited and said, “Being the Grand Marshal of the 70th Anniversary West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the greatest honors of my life.”

Serving as Deputy Grand Marshals are Meg McNerney Brill, Rich Hughes, and Michele McCue Shaffer. According to the Parade Committee, “All honorees are leaders within their communities and Irish/ Civic Organizations and are truly deserving recipients of this honor.”

The Deputy Grand Marshals are equally thrilled to be part of the Parade. Meg said, “The Parade has always been a family tradition for the McNerneys. I’m honored, humbled, and excited to march this year alongside my family and the other honorees.” Michele said she is carrying on the family tradition— her dad was a Deputy Grand Marshal

in 1994. “The Parade has always been a holiday in itself,” said Rich. “Outside of Christmas, there’s no other day that brings together so many of my family and friends.”

A DIFFERENT KIND OF DOCTOR

Care Rooted in Empathy & Experience

Do you ever wonder why some Doctors are so incredibly compassionate while others have a bedside manner better suited for the DMV?

In the case of Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine it is a case of true empathy. “As a new mother I had children that suffered from eczema and recurrent ear infections. Seeing them in pain and discomfort and not being able to participate in their favorite sport—swimming, set me on a path to look for a better solutions for their health issues.”

Dr. Aleksandra’s options were limited to two things. Prescription medications that often did not work and to make lifestyle changes to limit the triggers that were often the cause. “It was no way to live,” she shares “they were young and should’ve been living a bright, vibrant life. Instead I was monitoring their food intake, testing them for sensitivities, avoiding long exposure to chlorinated pools and doing my best to prepare for changing weather conditions. Every, Spring and Fall eczema would flare up. It wasn’t until she took them to an acupuncturist that she found real relief for them. “

This is why I often refer to my practice as “The Last Resort With The Best Results.” You’ve been everywhere else and been given the same disheartening prognosis, prescribed the same medications and told, “this is just something you’re going to have to learn to live with.” Soon after her family’s incredible experience with the healing arts she made the life changing decision to abandon her research and sales careers and pursue her doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. On that journey, she found solutions for some of her own health issues—life-long irregular periods and hip pain. “Acupuncture quite literally changed my life and I want to share that with the world,” she proclaims.

Your Golden Years Should Be Golden

While in school she watched as her aunt began to suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy. “Your golden years should be golden, not plagued with insufferable pain while doctors and specialists tell you there is nothing they can do.” Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, Dr. Aleksandra set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapyinduced) and now has a 90% success rate in treating this once difficult to manage condition.

“I was tired of seeing the older generation suffer unnecessarily,” shares Dr. Aleksandra. “Diagnosing them as just getting older and giving them a treatment plan of ‘you’re just going to have to get used to it’ has never sat well with me so I wanted to offer them a real option for treatment and care.”

A local Doctor provides truly compassionate care and proven solutions for chronic pain and complicated conditions.
22 Suburban Essex March 2023

Dr. Aleksandra has designed similar treatment protocols for other complicated, chronic conditions including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, post-shingles pain, and even macular degeneration. While each patient plan is tailored specifically to the patient’s concern and goals, all of her treatments are based on a framework that’s over fourteen years in the making. In addition Dr. Aleksandra isn’t opposed to more modern medical solutions. “It’s in blending the time-tested science of acupuncture with recent innovations in medicine that get me the best results.” One of those advancements is ATP Resonance Bio Therapy™, originally developed by NASA, it aids nerves in regeneration by providing them the nutrients they need to repair and renew, “very similar to what water does for a plant!”

The Magic of Compassionate Care

And what do those in her care have to say? “Dr Aleksandra looked me in my eyes and wanted to know about me, not just my condition. I feel like a person, not just a patient,” shares Joan. “In fact I don’t think she’s ever used the word patient.” Others proclaim “she saved my life” , “her neuropathy treatments gave me my life back, and “it’s a miracle she treated my fibromyalgia, I don’t know how else to explain it.”

Dr. Aleksandra has a long personal history in complicated, difficult to understand conditions and understands how tragic it can all be if left untreated. “I have sat where my patients sit. I’ve experienced their

pain and suffering on an intimate level. It’s why I practice the brand of medicine I do and why I’ve made it my life’s mission to treat the “untreatable.” It brings me such incredible joy when I get to say, “I can help you!”

Furthermore, Dr. Aleksandra has surrounded herself with staff that embraces this same approach to patient care. “You can ask any one of my patients and they will tell you that their favorite part about Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine is my staff.”

“I just love everyone here,” shares Christine, who has been a patient of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine for almost six years. “The girls are always so kind, it’s like going to the doctor with my girlfriends.”

Dr. Aleksandra and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and autoimmune diseases that leave other professionals scratching their heads. Sasha Acupuncture won the Gold Medal for Best Acupuncture in the 2022 Best of Essex Reader’s Choice Contest.

Discover the Hidden Storage Space in Your Walls

Homeowners with small kitchens sometimes think that the only way to enjoy more space would be to knock down walls and expand the size of the room itself. Instead, unlock the hidden storage space available between the studs of your walls. With custom small built-in spaces, you can display beautiful tableware or stylishly stash your Cuisinart and china.

Between-studs shelving is ideal as a kitchen pantry because the shallow shelves are perfect for canned goods. You can use a niche for storing spices, hanging utensils, or storing and displaying your cooking pans.w

With such custom features, a small kitchen will be less cluttered and appear larger. To enhance the beauty and functionality of any size kitchen, between the stud custom cabinetry can fit your look and your lifestyle.

Don’t Let Weeds Spoil the Pavers

Here’s a quick and easy way to avoid annoying weeds that sprout in the cracks between concrete pavers: replace the sand between pavers with polymer sand. When washed down with water, polymer sand dries into a non-porous yet flexible joint—locking in the pavers and preventing weeds from growing. To keep pavers looking their best, clean up spills promptly, and use an enzyme-based cleaner to remove stains.

Declutter with Garage Shelving

The garage is often the most neglected space in a house, becoming a dumping ground for items that don’t fit elsewhere. This results in a cluttered, disorganized space that can be challenging to navigate. Garage shelving can help solve this problem by providing a designated space for items to be stored, allowing for easier organization and accessibility. Shelves can be used to store tools, sporting equipment, and even seasonal items like holiday decorations.

The benefits of garage shelving extend beyond just organization. By decluttering and organizing the space, you can create a safer environment by reducing tripping hazards and improving visibility. Additionally, garage shelving can help extend the life of your belongings by protecting them from damage and wear.

Overall, garage shelving is a crucial investment for anyone looking to maximize their garage space and keep their belongings safe and organized. With the variety of options available, it’s easy to find a shelving system that meets your unique needs and space constraints.

Is Your Clothes Dryer a FIRE HAZARD?

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that approximately 14,000 clothes dryer-related fires occur each year. Under certain conditions, when lint blocks the flow of air, excessive heat buildup may cause a fire in some dryers. To prevent clothes dryer-caused fires, follow these often-overlooked safety precautions:

• Clean the lint filter regularly and make sure the dryer is operating properly. Clean the filter after each load of clothes. While the dryer is operating, check the outside exhaust to make sure exhaust air is escaping normally. If there are signs that the dryer is hotter than normal, it may be a sign that the dryer’s temperature control thermostat needs servicing.

• Check the exhaust duct more often if you have a plastic, flexible duct. This type of duct is more likely to trap lint than smooth metal ducting.

• Closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions for new installations. Most manufacturers that get their clothes dryers approved by Underwriters Laboratories specify the use of metal exhaust ducts. If you are having the dryer installed, insist upon metal ducts unless the installer has verified that the manufacturer permits the use of plastic ducts.

When it comes to remodeling your bathroom, there are several new technologies that you may want to consider. Here are a few:

Smart toilets are becoming increasingly popular, with features such as heated seats, built-in bidets, automatic flushing, and even voice-activated controls.

There are a variety of high-tech showerheads on the market that offer features such as adjustable water pressure and temperature, Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music or podcasts, and even built-in LED lighting.

Touchless faucets have become more prevalent due to their hygienic benefits. They use motion sensors to turn on and off, reducing the spread of germs.

Water-saving technologies can help reduce your water usage and save you money on your water bill. Low-flow toilets and showerheads, as well as aerators for your faucets, can help you conserve water.

Radiant floor heating is a luxurious addition to any bathroom, and can be especially appealing in colder climates. It provides a comfortable, even heat that is energy-efficient.

Smart mirrors are becoming more popular, with features such as builtin lighting, Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music or podcasts, and even voice-activated controls.

Waterproof TVs are specifically designed to withstand the humid environment of a bathroom.

Overall, these new technologies can help you create a more comfortable, luxurious, and efficient bathroom space.

Carpet or Hardwood?

When it comes to choosing between carpet and hardwood flooring for your home, there are a few key factors to consider.

Firstly, think about the overall aesthetic you’re trying to achieve. Hardwood flooring can add a classic, elegant touch to a room, while carpet can create a cozy, comfortable atmosphere.

Secondly, consider the amount of foot traffic in the room. Hardwood flooring is more durable and easier to clean, making it a better choice for high-traffic areas like entryways and living rooms. Carpet in hightraffic areas of the home is also likely to show it’s age much more quickly—while a hardwood floor can last indefinitely with the proper maintenance. Carpet, on the other hand, can be a good option for bedrooms or areas where you want to reduce noise and create a softer landing surface. Another consideration is maintenance. Hardwood flooring can be more expensive to install, but it typically requires less maintenance over time. Carpet, on the other hand, may need to be replaced more frequently due to wear and tear.

Finally, think about your budget. Hardwood flooring can be more expensive than carpet, but it can also add value to your home if you ever decide to sell. Carpet, on the other hand, is generally less expensive but may need to be replaced more frequently.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR ROOF?

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. It protects you from the elements, keeps your house warm and dry, and helps to maintain the overall structural integrity of your home. “The lifespan of a roof depends on a variety of factors, such as roofing material used, ventilation and weather conditions,” states Wilber Vargas, owner of Wilber’s Home Improvements. Here are some signs that he suggests you look out for that may indicate it is time to replace your roof:

Age: The most obvious sign that your roof needs to be replaced is its age. If your roof is over 20 years old, it may be time to start thinking about a replacement.

Leaks: If you notice water stains on your ceiling or walls, it could be a sign of a leaky roof. Leaks can be caused by many things, including damaged or missing shingles, faulty flashing, or a damaged underlayment.

Damaged Shingles: If your shingles are cracked, curled, or missing, it may be time to replace your roof. Damaged shingles can leave your roof vulnerable to leaks and can compromise its overall integrity.

Granule Loss: As shingles age, they can start to lose the granules that protect them from the sun’s UV rays. If you notice a lot of granules in your gutters or on the ground around your home, it may be time to replace your roof.

Sagging Roof: If your roof is sagging, it is a sign of serious structural damage. This could be caused by a number of things, including water damage or a faulty support structure. In this case, you should contact a professional roofer immediately.

GLAZE Salon Offers a Complete Beauty Experience

The Salon Experience

Expertise is important as this New York style salon offers, among many other things, the very popular Brazilian blowouts/keratin treatments and does a great deal of hair extension work using different types of hair extension products from LA. “Hair extensions are red hot right now and they can be very tricky,” Galiher says, “so you must have people who know what they are doing.” Popular extensions GLAZE provides include falls, halos, and layered halos.

Many of these extensions now feature the bayalage color highlights that are also very popular for hair—the blues, greens, and purples, and the silvery blonde highlights trending for Spring. Galiher notes, “Using extensions for color is a cool way to get the bayalage look without the need to dye your own hair.”

This emphasis on expertise—which also extends to the salon’s nail, eyebrow, lash, and waxing services—is why GLAZE prides itself on keeping their stylists and staff up to speed and recently welcomed

a new nail technician with 30 years of experience. Galiher says, “We make sure all of our stylists have access to classes on the latest in cutting techniques and have access to information on new products and how to use them.”

The Retail Experience

Not only does the salon stay up on the best products, but it makes many available for clients as well. Luxury haircare lines you won’t find nearly anywhere else include ENJOY, Oribe

and IIes Formula. A product line for men called 1812 includes shampoos, beard oils, pomades, and other beauty items. The salon also carries the Olaplex system that is designed to repair, strengthen, and protect hair and a full line of ancillary products for Brazilian blowouts.

But that’s just the beginning of the retail experience at GLAZE. Clients can browse products including the Save My Bag line of wipe clean neoprene cosmetic and toiletry bags; find Antica Farmacista candles and crystal diffusers; peruse

Swarovski crystal accented apparel; choose Peepers reading glasses; check out CBD-based skincare products and gummies, and all while perhaps sipping a cappuccino or latte from the Nespresso bar during the day, or enjoying a glass of wine or a mimosa, that the salon provides clients while they wait on evenings and Saturdays. Clients are always invited to relax and enjoy.

And that may be what firmly sets this salon on top as clients rave about its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

“People tell me how much they love it here, how professional and welcoming it is, and once they come in the first time, they come back,” says Galiher, “and that’s rewarding.” As a final bonus, GLAZE has its own parking lot with plenty of room for all—you won’t have to hunt to get your seat at this salon.

Safety, Support & Solutions for Abuse

Everyone knows someone who is currently experiencing abuse. It does not discriminate. Abuse can happen to anyone without regard to age, gender, sexual orientation, race, or socio-economic status. Since one in four women and one in seven men suffer from intimate partner abuse, you likely have a story of your own to tell.

In 1976, the problem was even worse, albeit unaddressed, due to the stigma around domestic violence. However, a small group of women decided that enough was enough. With nothing more than a few resources and a relentless sense of determination, these women set up shelters within their own homes to support survivors of domestic violence. It was in these informal, communal spaces that JBWS began.

they think their relationship is unhealthy, their empathetic staff is there. Moments after an incidence of abuse is reported to police, members of JBWS’ Crisis Response Team are at the hospital or police department offering critical access to resources.

When a survivor leaves their home in the middle of the night, they are welcomed into JBWS’ Emergency Safe House Shelter. If a person requires additional assistance, they may enter JBWS’ Transitional Living Program. With 11 fully furnished apartments, the Transitional Living Program enables survivors to receive long-term residential assistance and access to counseling, case management, life skills training, services for children, and assistance finding permanent housing.

As they process their experience with abuse, JBWS offers numerous counseling groups to help them heal. When it’s time to face their abusive partner in court, JBWS is at the survivor’s side offering legal advocacy and support through the JBWS-led Morris Family Justice Center.

Today, JBWS is a non-profit agency that offers safety, support, and solutions to all people impacted by domestic violence. When someone calls JBWS’ 24-Hour Helpline (1-877-782-2873) because

However, JBWS doesn’t just respond to abuse, they work to prevent it through community education and abuse intervention programs. The Dating Abuse Prevention Program educates teenagers and young adults about dating abuse while the JBWS-led Jersey Center for Non-Violence provides counseling to people who use abuse in their relationships. Through this counseling, they are able to stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse, change their behavior, and end domestic violence at its source.

All this is possible because a group of women decided that they were going to make a difference in their community. The collective strength of those few women is the reason that JBWS has answered more than 230,000 calls to its helpline, counseled or shelter more than 115,000 families, and educated well over 490,000 teenagers and young adults about dating abuse in just over 45 years.

Help is always within reach whether it be remotely or in person.

As the owner and senior interior designer of Creative Wallcoverings and Interiors (CWI), Rachel Kapner has been helping clients fall in love with the spaces in their homes for over 20 years. This passion, she says, also enables her to live and enjoy individual designs vicariously through her clients. Her golden rule: To listen and learn about each client, apply that to how they live in their homes, and then use their color and style preferences to create a space that fits their lifestyle. “Each client is unique and my design selections reflect that,” she says.

Rachel’s mother, Dorothy, started CWI 50 years ago with two partners in the town of Summit. After Rachel, who majored in Fine Arts at Roger Williams University and initially wanted to be a fashion designer, and her business partner and husband Gary, took over, they expanded and hired other talented people in order to assist more clients.

Today, it’s a full-service residential interior design firm now located in New Providence, and she and her talented staff can handle the entire process— from concept and design detailing to material selection and implementation. When designing a room, Rachel uses her appreciation for color while incorporating multiple textures for a classic and elegant look with lots of modern lines and a little bit of whimsy.

CWI has won many awards for their designs, including Mansion in May’s top honor, the Tulip Award, twice in 2006 and 2014. The firm is also often complimented by leading media sources, such as The Huffington Post and Aspire Design and Home magazine.

Rachel’s advice to other women who dream of running their own businesses: “It sounds cliché, but be passionate, determined and willing to put in the hard work,” she says. “That way, the business will grow and blossom organically.”

The journey at The Spa at Mecca begins with a complimentary one on one consultation with one of their expert physicians as well as an esthetician.

Dr. Tyra Manso

Montclair Pediatric Dental Care, Owner and Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist

We have built a culture here at Montclair Pediatric Dental Care (MPDC) that breaks the ‘scary dental office’ stigma,” says board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Tyra Manso, who owns the practice. “Our patients are part of the Growing Smiles Club. This gives them pride and ownership of their oral health.”

She was inspired to become a pediatric dentist in her fourth year of dental school at the University of Michigan. “My professors at the time encouraged me to pursue pediatrics because I displayed a natural ease and connection with children,” says Dr. Manso. “I love what I do because oral health is such a major component of the overall development

and wellness of a child. If I can teach families about prevention early, the result is a cavity-free, beautiful, bright smile that will grow into adolescence and adulthood.”

MPDC offers a wide range of services from fluoride treatments and sealants to dental extractions, orthodontics, diet counseling and more. Also, because safety is always a priority, the office follows CDC Compliant Infection Control and Sterilization Practices and has a PUR2O In-Office Water Filtration System.

A business owner, wife and mom, Dr. Manso makes time to give back. She’s been a medical mission volunteer providing free dental care to underserved

children in the United States and other countries. She also visits local schools to teach children how oral health can be fun. She participates in community events in Montclair, where she resides, as well.

“The best advice I was ever given personally is to always present as my most authentic self,” she says. “That has given me great success as a business owner and puts my patients at ease. I would encourage other women to follow their dreams because there are so many young people watching and believing in themselves by our example.”

Dayana Moreno

Mona Lisa Framing

As a girl in Caracas, Venezuela, Dayana Moreno loved going to museums with her father. She dreamed of a life working with art, and, after moving to the U.S., got a degree in art history from Montclair State University. Then, she fell in love with framing. By 2007, she was working as the production manager of Maplewood’s Mona Lisa Framing. She purchased it from the original owner in 2018.

The pandemic forced her to learn fast how to run a business in order to survive. A friend gave her sound advice about business lows: “It’s the space between the notes that makes the music.”

“There will always be highs and lows,” she said. “The lows are an opportunity to reassess and look for growth.” Not only has she survived, but flourished, continuing to cherish the stories and treasures she helps clients preserve—from a child’s fingerprints to priceless artworks.

Kristin Fless, MD

Acting Chair of the Department of Medicine, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center

As acting Chair of the Department of Medicine, Kristin Fless, MD oversees clinical, educational, administrative and research activities. She practices in the areas of neurocritical care, internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and sleep medicine. Dr. Fless began her career at Cooperman Barnabas in the Critical Care Division, a division that treats severe medical issues including stroke, seizures, post-op surgical care and respiratory or heart failure.

Dr. Fless was drawn to this specialty because “we have the chance to intervene and in effect provide a good outcome for patients. It’s seeing physiology in action.” She is an advocate of compassionate caregiving, which she defines as being able to see the patient as a whole person. Dr. Fless recognizes the need for comprehensive and compassionate care when patients are in a hospital setting. “We’re trained to treat the entire patient, not just their disease.” Compassionate care encompasses more than treating their medical needs. “Listening is a component of compassionate caregiving and may include addressing a patient’s spiritual needs or integrating treatment with other health care professionals and family members.”

Dr. Fless feels a sense of responsibility to train the next generation. She mentors student and resident physicians as well as respiratory therapists. She is the physician leader at Cooperman Barnabas for The Schwartz Center Rounds, a national organization whose mission is to put compassion at the heart of healthcare through programs, education, and advocacy. “Our trainees have been invited into these rounds and they have the opportunity to present at them.” She has been heralded for her teaching prowess and received the Golden Apple Harvey E. Nussbaum Award for excellence in teaching. Of those she has taught or mentored she says, “I am proud that they have learned excellent technical skills and compassionate caregiving expertise at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.”

Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Fless was recognized by the American Cancer Society for her work to provide an early diagnosis of lung cancer through low-dose screening CTs of the lung in high-risk patients. Dr. Fless continues to excel and exceed. “I strive to provide the best medical experience for patients. My focus is to find opportunities for new programs, new technologies or to improve upon what is currently available.” 94

Marie Khoury

Pink Jewels Boutique

Marie Khoury was only 25 when, 13 years ago, she opened Livingston’s Pink Jewels. After teaching school for one year, she’d realized it was not for her. Coming from a family of business owners, who were very supportive of her, she weighed the risks and the benefits—and created the “lifestyle boutique,” which carries jewelry, clothing, bags, home decor and gifts.

“The retail industry was mostly older, so my youth was a little bit of an obstacle,” she said. Knowing how she liked to be treated when walking into a store, she incorporated those feelings into designing a welcoming, warm—but not pushy—atmosphere that customers immediately responded to.

“Shopping should be fun,” says Marie. “Treat everyone with respect. And remember that you don’t know everything. Listen to your customers and staff,” she added. She finds that this business model generates an energy which makes people want to return.

Veronica Wheat

Owner, Chef V

Working at a vegetarian restaurant at 15, Veronica Wheat realized that healthy food can be delicious. She became a private chef and added a certification as a nutritional therapist. When Veronica started a meal delivery service, with each delivery she included a specially prepared green beverage. The demand for it became so great that she took on another entrepreneurial venture: Chef V.

The product line includes Chef V’s green drink plan that helps customers lose weight, detox vital organs, and revitalize skin and hair; a cleanse; and a 21-day detox. The ingredients are organic, always blended—not juiced. Veronica explains that “Blending gets all the nutritional benefits of fiber by using the entire fruit and vegetable.” The best advice she has received is to be passionate and true to herself. “I stay true by blending the ingredients, and not pasteurizing my products.”

Clients can visit the store and observe the production process or opt for online ordering and delivery.

Ialways saw myself as having my own practice,” said Dr. RoseAnn Giannella. Now, having served the people of Roseland and surrounding areas for almost three decades, she’s firmly established as the go-to dentist for both general and cosmetic dental care.

When she started out, she noted, it was more difficult for a woman in dentistry. “It was mostly a boys’ club. There were a lot more male dentists than female,” she said. Today, however, many actively seek out a female dentist, finding their care more soothing and relaxing.

One of the best pieces of advice she ever received was to “treat your staff well, and maintain a welcoming office environment,” she said. She also prides herself on keeping up with the many innovations in dental science.

Dr. Linda Stone & Dr. Vanna Stone

Gentle Caring Dentistry

It is not an understatement to describe Dr. Linda Stone and her daughter, Dr. Vanna Stone, as the dynamic duo of dentistry. Their personalities and approach to dentistry create an atmosphere in which they strive to give someone a beautiful smile and a great experience at Gentle Caring Dentistry.

Dr. Linda Stone observes that when a person does not smile, others may get the wrong impression about their personality. One of the things she enjoys most about dentistry is “giving someone confidence in their smile.”

Dr. Vanna Stone underscores how women have attained positions and respect in the field. “When I went to dental school, 51% of students in my class were women. My mother only had 10% in her class.” She credits her mother as being her mentor and helping to shape her career. Dr. Vanna Stone enjoys the many aspects dentistry affords. “It’s science and art. It involves problem solving, creativity and hand skills.”

Karen Ross Kerstein

Menorah Chapels at Millburn, President & Manager

NJ Lic. No. JP03663

Funeral service is a helping profession so the transition from one type of helping profession to another was very smooth,” says Karen Ross Kerstein, president and manager of Menorah Chapels at Millburn. Before taking over for her father, Herbert Ross, who founded the business, Karen obtained her bachelor’s degree in education and psychology and later her master’s degree in guidance and counseling in order to become a vocational counselor.

“Many of the positions I held were grant funded,” she says. “This was in the era when grant money was dwindling and my father offered me an opportunity I just couldn’t refuse. I went back to school again and after a year of rigorous training and internship, I obtained my license to practice Mortuary Science in 1983.”

Although many skills can be learned, having a heart for helping comes from within. She

continues to use her knowledge and her innate compassion to provide solace to others. “At Menorah Chapels, every family we serve is treated like family by our staff,” she says. “This is very important when helping people at a very emotional time.”

Located in Union, Menorah Chapels has been serving the Jewish community for over four decades. It’s the only strictly Jewish funeral home in Union County that maintains its own building and doesn’t share its facilities with any other funeral home.

Menorah Chapels at Millburn can also arrange funerals worldwide. Regardless of where services take place, families’ religious, financial and sensitivity needs are always met.

Agraduate of the New York School of Dentistry and with advanced studies in Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Golestani has always sought the best for dentistry’s youngest patients. Dr. Golestani successfully established the continuity of services within her practice.

In 1995, she founded a small dental practice for children. A young mother, she divided her time between caring for her baby and developing her practice. Gradually, she added additional dentists to care for children and adults. “I noticed little by little, my patients were growing up and needed to transition to dentists with other specialties,” she says. “So, I added several general practice dentists, additional pediatric dentists, an orthodontist, an oral surgeon, and an endodontist to serve all patients, in a one-shop environment.”

Dr. Golestani treats children from crib to college in her practice. In addition to general pediatric care, Dr. Golestani is the only known dentist in the Northern New Jersey area who performs lip and tongue tie procedures on babies as young as two days outside New York City. Apryl Gassman

Peace Love Home

Even as a teenager, Apryl Gassman was organized and neat, with socks rolled tidily in a drawer. Family and friends acknowledged she had a natural knack for organizing, often asking her for help reworking their spaces. Yet, she said, she spent years in a job she was unhappy in. Then came the pandemic. “Everyone was reinventing themselves,” said Gassman. So, two years ago, she decided to do what she loved…she launched Peace Love Home, which declutters, reorganizes, and straightens up everything from closets to pantries to offices to garages— and everything in-between.

Her first ‘client’ was a friend who needed help preparing for a major home renovation and insisted on paying for Gassman’s aid. “I couldn’t believe I was getting paid for something I love to do!” she exclaimed.

If a house is cluttered, “People don’t want to be judged,” she states. The single mother of two teenagers understands it can be emotionally difficult detaching from excess ‘stuff.’ She helps her clients unclutter without judgement.

After hearing from her clients what their needs are, she gets started on a system, and loves hearing how happy they are with the reset. She offers monthly or quarterly maintenance services, but finds most clients transition easily to her systems. She also assists those who are cleaning out a loved one’s home, either in advance of a move to assisted living, or after a passing. Her relationships with nonprofits ensure usable items are donated, not thrown out.

Like many who’ve found fulfillment in their own business, her advice is simple: “Make sure you’re doing something every day that you love.”

Amanda Cuoco

AC Dance

Amanda Cuoco has fulfilled two professional dreams. As a professional dancer in Texas, she performed with Ballet El Paso/UTEP Ballet, Lone Star Ballet, West Texas A&M Ballet, and several other prestigious outlets. More recently, she fulfilled her second dream when she established a dance studio, AC Dance in Bloomfield. Amanda’s experience at Steps on Broadway in New York City helped to propel her to open her own business. Since 2022, AC Dance has offered various dance and fitness classes to students ages five through adult.

Dancers learn serious techniques at AC Dance and develop a deeper sense of ballet. “Yes, I stress proper form and technique in my classes, but my dancers understand that ballet encompasses the inner values of grace, grit, and integrity as well,” says Amanda.

Because Amanda’s studio is new, she continues to learn the ropes, confront the challenges, and celebrate the joys of establishing a business. She advises, “ Find people you admire who focus on bettering themselves. And keep striving despite any challenges. You will find your success.”

Carol Karsos

Partner of East Hanover Diner

Carol Karsos knows the restaurant business inside out. Being born into a restaurant family, it is all she has ever known. Karsos met her husband, Michael, one summer when she was working in her family’s restaurant—the Brookside Dinner. Michael later bought the restaurant with his brothers John and George. After graduating from college with a Management/Marketing Degree, Karsos married Michael and became the restaurant’s fourth partner. In 2013, the four owners bought their current restaurant, the East Hanover Diner.

The East Hanover Diner is a traditional Greek Diner that offers standard menu fare. With freshly baked desserts and bread selections, patrons never leave the Diner hungry. Traditional Greek cuisine is also a daily specialty.

Karsos loves all aspects of the restaurant business, which she says is hard, grueling work. “You must have a good work ethic to succeed in the restaurant business. Challenges happen 24/7.” Still, owning and managing a diner is a great opportunity. “Where else can you offer your customers large portions at a great value?”

Cipriano Law Offices has 3 qualified mediators, who are on the court approved list and can help families work through all aspects of custody, parenting time, child support and deal with equitable distribution of marital assets. The firm recognizes the strain that delays place on families. “Right now, it is hard for those going through a divorce to get relief,” says Melissa. “Mediation allows your case to continue moving forward in the face of court delays.”

Mediation allows parties to resolve their issues amicably. According to Melissa, “Stats show that resolving issues by compromising leads to less litigious divorces and doing so through mediation helps keep the overall costs down.”

Melissa says, “As a mediator you get to know the parties well. You understand the challenges they are facing, and you can help them craft a resolution that will work best for their family.”

The ethos of Cipriano Law Offices is to help families create a happy, healthy, stable new life after divorce, which is certainly evident in their dedication to moving families forward in these difficult times.

Melissa and her team assist with all aspects of Family Law representation throughout NJ through Mediation, Parenting Coordination, and Litigation by a team with over 70 combined years of Family Law representation.

Why Stretching is Important for Your Health

Stretching is an essential aspect of any physical activity, from a light stroll to an intense workout. It involves moving your muscles and joints in a controlled manner, which increases flexibility, reduces stiffness, and helps prevent injury. It’s an excellent way to keep your body healthy and functioning optimally, regardless of your age or fitness level.

One of the primary benefits of stretching is that it improves your range of motion. This allows you to move your limbs more easily and with less discomfort. Tight muscles can restrict movement, leading to pain and discomfort, but stretching can help to alleviate these symptoms. Additionally, stretching can enhance athletic performance by preparing your muscles for physical activity, increasing circulation, and improving muscle coordination.

Stretching can also help to prevent injuries. It promotes better alignment, which reduces the likelihood of joint or muscle strain. It also helps to increase blood flow to the muscles, which can improve recovery time and reduce soreness after physical activity. In addition, stretching can have significant mental health benefits. It can reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and improving mental clarity. It’s an excellent way to unwind after a long day and can promote better sleep, which is crucial for overall health.

In conclusion, stretching is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. It can increase flexibility, reduce stiffness, prevent injury, enhance athletic performance, and promote mental wellbeing. Whether you’re an athlete or simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, stretching is a valuable addition to any daily routine.

Foods to Boost Your IMMUNE SYSTEM

The immune system plays an essential role in protecting our bodies from harmful pathogens, viruses, and bacteria. Eating a balanced diet is one of the most effective ways to support your immune system. Here are five foods that can help boost your immunity:

CITRUS FRUITS

Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are rich in vitamin C. This antioxidant helps increase the production of white blood cells that fight off infections. Eating just one medium-sized orange can provide you with your entire daily requirement of vitamin C.

LEAFY GREENS

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and broccoli are high in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants and fiber. They also contain flavonoids that help improve immune function.

GARLIC

Garlic is well known for its immuneboosting properties. It contains sulfur compounds that help activate immune cells and increase their ability to fight off infections.

ALMONDS

Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect the body from damage caused by harmful free radicals. They are also rich in healthy fats that help keep your immune system functioning properly.

YOGURT

Yogurt is a great source of probiotics, which are healthy bacteria that live in your gut and help strengthen your immune system. Eating yogurt regularly can help reduce your risk of infections and improve your overall health.

Incorporating these immune-boosting foods into your diet can help improve your body's ability to fight off infections and stay healthy. Eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods is key to supporting a strong immune system.

HOW TO STAY HYDRATED

Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and well-being. Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, flush out toxins, and keep your organs functioning properly. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to a range of issues, including headaches, fatigue, and even more serious health problems. In this article, we’ll discuss some easy ways to stay hydrated throughout the day.

To stay hydrated, the most obvious and effective way is to drink plenty of water. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. If you find it difficult to drink plain water, try infusing it with fruit or adding a splash of lemon or lime juice.

Farm fresh, certified organic, plant-based foods, and raw green drinks—Handmade then delivered to your door by Private Chef & Nutritional Therapist, Veronica.

We are offering 55% OFF all deliveries at ChefV.com Use code SUBURBAN at checkout. Customer Service 866-709-6060 or chefv@chefv.com

Also, Check out our store in West Caldwell with organic low sugar smoothies, blended juices, and bowls. We offer FREE SAMPLES of our famous Green Drink!

In addition to drinking water, you can also eat hydrating foods. Many fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and celery, are high in water content and can help you stay hydrated. Avoid sugary drinks like sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks, as they often contain high amounts of sugar and can lead to dehydration. Opt for water or herbal tea instead.

Keeping a water bottle with you at all times can also encourage you to drink more water throughout the day. If you’re not sure whether you’re drinking enough water, monitor the color of your urine. If it’s pale yellow or clear, you’re wellhydrated. If it’s dark yellow or amber, you may be dehydrated and should drink more water.

If you’re exercising or engaging in physical activity, you’ll need to drink more water to compensate for the fluids you’re losing through sweat. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.

To sum up, staying hydrated is vital for our overall health and well-being. Incorporating simple strategies like drinking plenty of water, eating hydrating foods, avoiding sugary drinks, keeping a water bottle with you, monitoring your urine color, and being mindful of your activity level into your daily routine can help you maintain proper hydration levels and reduce the risk of dehydration-related health issues. Remember to listen to your body and drink water whenever you feel thirsty. By making hydration a priority, you’ll be able to perform at your best and live a healthier life.

The Benefits of Meditation

Meditation has been practiced for centuries, and in recent years, its popularity has grown significantly. The practice involves training the mind to focus and calm the thoughts, and it has numerous benefits for both the mind and body.

One of the most significant benefits of meditation is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. By slowing down the thoughts and focusing on the present moment, meditation can help to quiet the mind and ease feelings of stress and anxiety. This, in turn, can help to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Meditation can also improve overall emotional wellbeing, helping to regulate moods and reduce symptoms of depression. Studies have shown that regular meditation can increase feelings of happiness and decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression.

In addition to its mental health benefits, meditation can also improve physical health. It has been shown to boost the immune system, improve sleep quality, and even reduce chronic pain.

Perhaps most importantly, meditation is a practice that can be easily integrated into daily life. With just a few minutes of practice each day, anyone can experience the benefits of meditation. It is a simple yet powerful tool that can help to improve overall wellbeing, reduce stress, and promote a more balanced, fulfilling life.

A Complete Approach to Dentistry

Dental health and overall wellness begin in the mouth. So believes Med Dawoud, DMD, and his partner, Paula Gencarelli, DMD, at D&G Dental. They celebrate their 11th year of dental services to West Orange and surrounding communities in October 2022.

With a staff of 10 dental professionals, D&G Dental provides complete, comprehensive dental care for patients of all ages. From cavities to cleanings, whitening, and implants to complete mouth restoration, the dental experts at D&G Dental provide the utmost care with quality, modern treatments.

The office maintains the latest in dental technology, providing immediate access to views of teeth and gum tissue by intraoral cameras, scanners, and 3d pictures of sinus and nerve tissue. Modern X-Ray equipment vastly reduces radiology exposure to patients. Through continuing education, all employees keep abreast of the most recent dental findings and procedures.

At the core of D&G Dental’s mission is not to treat just the mouth but the whole person. In recent years, Dr. Dawoud has seen a lot of patients with underlying medical conditions. A careful review of the patient’s medical records, medications, and recent incidents often affects the treatment of the mouth. For example, current studies indicate that periodontal gum disease can impact medical conditions like diabetes, heart attacks, and osteoporosis. By treating periodontal disease, these conditions, in turn, can improve.

Dr. Dawoud states that dental implants have had the most profound effect on his patients. Many patients come to his office feeling hopeless because of bad teeth resulting from either neglect or an underlying medical condition. Dental implants are an example of where science and artistry combine to produce great results. “With the latest and least invasive procedures, we can restore a mouth full of teeth, achieving a desired cosmetic look and optimal function.

The ability to chew well with good teeth aids in the digestion process, which begins in the mouth,” he says.

“Everyone deserves a beautiful, healthy smile,” says Dr. Dawoud. D&G

When Faith Meets Fear

It took Alexander the Great 10 years—from the time he was 23 to his death at age of 33—to conquer most of the known world. Alexander has been studied and admired throughout the centuries for his incredible willingness and ability to take action in the face of adversity.

This is made even more interesting by the fact that Alexander’s armies were always outnumbered, sometimes by as much as twenty to one. But Alexander’s philosophy was to attack so swiftly and move so quickly that his soldiers didn’t have time to be afraid. He knew that fear is the greatest obstacle to success. The more we think about all the possible reasons something won’t work out, the more our fear paralyzes us, and we end up not taking any action at all.

Fear blocks more people from achieving their goals. It is the anticipation of negative results, imagination working overtime. People are afraid of failing, afraid they will make a mistake, afraid they will look foolish. Many times, what we’re afraid of isn’t even real. You could look at the acronym F.E.A.R., which stands for False Evidence Appearing Real, and realize it’s the reason we start to believe the excuses we make for ourselves. Therefore, the first step in taming any fear is to analyze what is real and what is not. Then dive in and take action.

In order to take action, we have to learn to get rid of our fear of failure. Author Tom Peters tells about how he had the privilege of introducing the late Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, when he was going to be introduced into the sales and marketing executives Hall of Fame.

“What can you say in two minutes about a guy like Walton?” says Peters. “During that time, I called David Glass, CEO of Walmart. I said, ‘If you had 90 seconds to say something about Sam Walton, what would you say?’ Quicker than a wink, he answered, ‘Sam Walton is not afraid to fail. He’ll give something a try, he’ll make a total mess of it, and walk back in tomorrow with a smile on his face and another idea.’ It’s that ability to try something, make a mess of it, and get on with the next action that allows us to win out over fear.”

What we don’t think about is that there’s only one first time. Once you take an action, it could never be quite as scary or difficult again. Comedian Rita Rudner told me when she got up on stage for the first time in the beginning of her career she was in front of a handful of drunken patrons at three in the morning. Those times were difficult, but she faced her fears and went on. Not only did she put the worst behind her, she learned something every time she stepped up to that microphone.

Every time we step up to try something we’ve never done before, we learn more than we expect. The uniqueness of the experience gives us insights we could never get except by taking an action. Why is it that children are such quick learners? It’s because everything is new to them. They’re experiencing everything for the first time. When we venture out into new worlds, we open our minds and our senses to things we might never otherwise experience. Our knowledge of the world expands tremendously with each new step we take.
